Museum IPM book with promotional swag

Museum IPM Guide

How do you keep pests from destroying priceless artifacts? Author and Collections Manager at Spurlock Museum Christa Deacy-Quinn says, start with housekeeping. Her guidebook to controlling pests in a a museum setting is based on integrated pest management, or IPM.

Because the subject matter is not very glamorous, she wanted the graphics to add some pizazz. The manuscript I received had written on the front page in all caps: “MAKE IT LOOK COOL.” We agreed on bright colors, modern typography, an open layout, and lots of infographics and photos.

The guide starts with step by step instructions with pictures and flow charts. The back of the book contains details on each pest you are likely to find in a museum setting.

The resulting book is something Christa is excited to promote. She also asked me to design some notecards, buttons, and stickers to help get the word out.

Who knows how many works of art will be saved by following this guide.

Iyengar Yoga Books

Lois Steinberg, Ph.D., is an Advanced Junior 2 Certified Iyengar Yoga instructor with over 35 years of experience. This Advanced level certificate has been awarded directly by BKS Iyengar to only three practitioners in North America. Lois travels the world to share her deep understanding of Iyengar yoga, and has written numerous books and articles. These three, designed by Studio 2D, are among them.

These books feature many photos of each pose with detailed commentary. The design of the books had to show the photos clearly, as large as possible, with the written descriptions close to the corresponding  photos. We optimized each photo for clarity and contrast, and to make them consistent across various days of shooting. The covers are photos of Lois’ saris, with ornamental details used throughout each book.

Rock Crest/Rock Glen

“Walter Burley Griffin was one of those remarkable Midwesterners who populated Chicago at the beginning of the last century. Griffin was one of a handful of progressive architects who followed the teachings of Louis Henry Sullivan, a group that also included his wife Marion Lucy Mahony and Frank Lloyd Wright. Griffin’s career encompassed the three separate disciplines of architecture, landscape design, and urban planning. And what he did in America is only a part of his accomplishment, for Griffin settled in Australia in 1914 and moved again to India in 1935, where he died in 1937, having just turned sixty, at the height of his powers and relatively young compared with many architects. By comparison, if Wright had died at Griffin’s age none of his late works—from Falling Water to the Guggenheim Museum—would exist.”

From the introduction to Rock City/Rock Glen, Mason City, Iowa: The American Masterwork of Marion M. and Walter B. Griffin, collection of essays by Paul Kruty, Robert E. McCoy, Paul E. Sprague, and James Weirick
